Karen, a vibrant 26 year old woman, became unwell and attended Sire Charles Gairdner Hospital. A rare form of leukaemia was diagnosed but she succumbed within hours. Later, her mother Jane approached Dr David Joske, then head of the Department of Haematology, with the idea of raising funds for leukaemia research. Thus the “Charles Leukaemia Fund” was born. It has supported clinical trials and other research for over 10 years, bring the newest advances in treatment to people with blood cancers. Jane and David agree this legacy is Karen’s gift to the people of Australia.
