RDA Peel is seeking community volunteers to become part of a team which will provide valuable input into future strategic planning for the Peel region. The volunteers chosen to become part of this select group will be required to attend two workshops in Mandurah from 12 noon to 5.30pm on Monday, 25 February and Monday 18 March 2013 and complete some pre-reading prior to the about dates. A light lunch, refreshments and afternoon tea will be provided. To express your interest in being part of the team please contact RDA Peel via email community@rdapeel.org.au by Wednesday, 6 February 2013, providing a brief profile of yourself (less than 100 words) and your areas of special interest or concern (e.g. environment, early childhood education, business development). All personal information provided will be treated as confidential.

Grant Opportunities RDA-Peel Image Healthways Healthy Club Sponsorship Winter 2013 – Heathways and Sports Medicine Aust (WA Branch). Incorporated clubs playing in a recognised sporting competition over the Winter 2013 season may apply for up to $3,000. These funds can be used to address health issues within the club as specific education and training initiatives. Refer to the guidelines for more information. Applications close Friday, 15 February at 5pm. For guidelines and to apply online visit Sports Medicine Australia’s website www.healthyclub.org.au or phone 9285 8033. 2013 Coles Junior Landcare School Garden Grant Since 2008 Coles has been providing School Garden Grants of up to $1,000 to schools and youth groups to help create gardens in their grounds or community, such as bush tucker gardens, water wise gardens or veggie gardens. These projects encourage students to learn about the environment through “outdoor learning” and interaction in developing their own school gardens. Round 1 is open and closes 5pm AEST Friday, 15 February. Round 2 and 3 close 5pm on 10 May and 2 August respectively. Trail Funding – Lotterywest and the Dept. of Sport & Recreation (State Government) Funding is available to support various types of trails such as walking, cycling, horse riding and paddling routes. In general these grants fall into the four areas: •Planning •Construction •Upgrade •Promotion & Resources Applications for $15,000 or less can be submitted at any time. Applications of more than $15,000 (generally require a contribution from applicants and/or other sources on a matching dollar for dollar basis, in-kind contributions can be up to 25% of the total project cost) are currently open and close on 15 March 2013. Community Notice Board Peel-Harvey Catchment Council (PHCC) – Waterbird Ramsar Site Report Card The Peel-Yalgorup Ramsar listed System (PYS) is internationally recognised as an important habitat for migratory and resident shorebirds. It is home to a lot of birds – not only our local residents, but many from distant lands, who come to feed on its productive wetlands. They are a fascinating study in their own right and have long been seen as indicators of health of the environment. PHCC is always seeking ways of protecting these Ramsar Wetlands. Thanks to the many keen volunteers PHCC now have a good understanding of their numbers and their fluctuations which is necessary for proper management. Current Successful Peel Grant Recipients RDA-Peel Image CSRFF 2013/14 – Dept. of Sport & Recreation (State Government) 55 projects totalling over $17 million was granted in January, including: • Shire of Murray – $300,000 towards construction of new pavilion at the Pinjarra Bowling Club. • Shire of Murray – $350,000 towards upgrade of the Coolup Regional Equestrian Centre. • Shire of Waroona – $125,000 towards upgrade and extension of the gymnasium at the Waroona Recreation Centre. Lotterywest – State Government In November and December 2012, Lotterywest granted over $29 million including: •City of Mandurah – $2,275 (Nov12) towards workshops to teach bush care volunteers how to build and install nesting boxes for bats in local bush land. •Compassionate Friends Mandurah Inc $6,418 (Nov12) towards information technology to enable the organisation’s volunteers to continue developing support to grieving families in the Mandurah region. •Event Assist Inc – $14,000 (Dec12) towards equipment hire and advertising for two classic car events to be held in April and October 2013 in Pinjarra. •Mandurah Lotteries House Inc. – $33,885 (Dec12) towards minor property improvements and furniture to enhance the services provided by the community organisations located in the Mandurah Lotteries House. •Murray Music and Drama Club (Inc) – $14,782 (Dec12) towards equipment to assist the group with its drama and music workshops and community performances in the Peel region. •Peel SeniorNet Assoc Inc. – $2,003 (Dec12) towards information technology to support the activities of this group which teaches and encourages seniors in the use of computers in the Peel region. •Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale – $7,215 (Nov12) towards equipment hire and advertising for an Australia Day event in Serpentine-Jarrahdale. •Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale – $85,000 (Dec12) towards construction of a pavilion and BBQ area as part of the Mundijong Railway Reserve precinct which will provide a meeting space for the community. •St Aidan’s Playgroup Byford – $2,074 (Nov12) towards early years educational and developmental resources for children and their families attending St Aidan’s playgroup in Byford.
